How to verify a Cameroonian degree from abroad.

Six concrete steps for international admissions teams, embassies, credential evaluators and employers who need a primary-source confirmation of a Cameroonian degree — and what to do when digital channels don't respond.

Verifying a Cameroonian university degree from abroad takes longer than verifying a credential from a country with a centralised online registry — but it is consistently achievable when the workflow targets the right office, in the right language, and allows time for the right follow-up. This guide is a practical playbook for international admissions teams, embassies, credential evaluators and employers who need a primary-source confirmation of a Cameroonian degree.

Why direct verification matters

Document-only checks — comparing scans against templates, matching seals visually, validating signatures — are useful for triage but cannot substitute for primary-source confirmation. Fraudulent diplomas regularly reproduce institutional seals and registrar signatures with high fidelity. The only definitive check is direct correspondence with the issuing institution's registrar. Every other method is circumstantial.

The verification chain — six steps

1. Identify the issuing institution

Cameroonian universities have similar names across the bilingual system (Université de Yaoundé I vs. University of Yaoundé I; many faith-based institutions share branding). Use the credential's exact institutional name and seal as printed. Cross-check the institution against the Ministry of Higher Education (MINESUP)accreditation register before going further — a credential from a non-accredited institution is not recognised regardless of the credential's apparent legitimacy.

2. Find the correct office

University-issued credentials are confirmed through the Office of the Registrar (Anglophone) or Scolarité Centrale / Service des Diplômes(Francophone). Departmental secretaries cannot confirm credentials authoritatively. The institution's official website (the .cm domain) is the canonical channel for contact details — third-party aggregators are not authoritative.

3. Send a verification request in the institution's working language

Anglophone institutions expect English correspondence; Francophone institutions expect French. Mixed-language requests are routinely deprioritised. Include the applicant's full legal name, date of birth, programme of study, year of graduation, credential reference number (if printed), and a copy of the credential. Most institutions require an applicant consent form signed by the credential holder authorising the verification.

4. Allow time for the response

Realistic turnaround for a Cameroonian registrar to respond by email ranges from 3 business days to 6 weeks, depending on the institution, the time of year (academic calendar peaks slow response), and whether the registrar has digital access to historical records. Smaller and older institutions often retain records in physical archives, which requires a registrar staff member to locate the file manually.

5. Escalate if the digital channel fails

Many Cameroonian institutions have intermittent email access or understaffed registrar offices. When email and phone do not produce a response within the documented attempt budget, the options are:

  • Written letter on institutional letterhead via post or courier.
  • In-person follow-up at the registrar's office — typically the only reliable channel for institutions without functional email.
  • Ministry liaison through MINESUP for persistent non-responses on legitimate requests.

International admissions teams rarely have the budget or local presence to execute these escalations themselves. A Cameroon-based verification partner is the practical option.

6. Document the outcome

The verification record should preserve: the channel of contact used (email, letter, in-person visit), the name and role of the institutional respondent, the date of confirmation, the exact text of the institutional response, and any attached evidence (signed letter, registrar attestation, archive page photo). Adjudication-grade records cite this evidence rather than inferring from the underlying credential alone.

Common pitfalls

Confusing accreditation with operation

Some private institutions operate openly in Cameroon without ministry accreditation. Operation alone does not confer recognition. Always cross-check against the accreditation register at the time of credential issuance — accreditation status can change.

Treating WES / ECE evaluations as verifications

Credential evaluators such as WES, ECE, IQAS and ICAS issue equivalency assessments, not primary-source verifications. Their reports compare the Cameroonian credential to a comparable foreign credential but typically rely on the applicant submitting documents directly. For adjudication-grade trust, an evaluator's report should be paired with a primary-source verification from the issuing institution.

Accepting departmental confirmation

A confirmation from the department or faculty is not equivalent to a registrar confirmation. Only the registrar / Service des Diplômes is authoritative for issuance facts (name, programme, award, date).

What VeriCam handles end-to-end

VeriCam's verification workflow covers each step above with documented evidence on every case file. For Cameroonian institutions specifically, we maintain working contacts with registrar offices and conduct in-person follow-up when digital channels are slow or silent — see our verification methodologyfor the documented standards governing primary-source contact, officer review, audit retention and report integrity.
