Cameroonian medical credentials for international licensing.

ECFMG, MCC, GMC and AMC pathways for Cameroonian medical graduates. WDOMS recognition, medical school primary-source verification, Cameroon Medical Council registration, letter of good standing — what international medical regulators expect.

For Cameroonian medical doctors seeking international licensure — and for foreign licensing boards adjudicating them — the verification pathway is consistently longer than for most other credentials. Two-layered verification (medical school + Medical Council) is the norm, ECFMG / WDOMS recognition is specific to which Cameroonian medical school issued the degree, and the receiving jurisdiction's pathway determines what evidence is required. This guide is a structured reference for that pathway.

The Cameroonian medical credential

The standard Cameroonian medical credential is the Doctorat en Médecine (Doctorat d'État en Médecine), a 7-year integrated programme combining pre-medical sciences, clinical rotations and a thesis defence. Graduates emerge as Docteurs en Médecine eligible for registration with the Cameroon Medical Council.

Cameroonian medical schools

Cameroon has a small set of accredited medical training institutions:

Faculté de Médecine et des Sciences Biomédicales — University of Yaoundé I (FMSB UY1)

Cameroon's oldest medical school. The vast majority of senior Cameroonian physicians hold an FMSB UY1 Doctorat en Médecine. FMSB UY1 is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), sponsored by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) and FAIMER. ECFMG sponsorship eligibility uses WDOMS as its primary reference; FMSB UY1 graduates are typically ECFMG-eligible.

Faculty of Health Sciences — University of Buea (FHS UB)

UB's anglophone medical programme, established later than FMSB. FHS UB is also listed in WDOMS. ECFMG sponsorship eligibility follows the standard verification pathway.

Faculté de Médecine et des Sciences Pharmaceutiques — University of Douala (FMSP UD)

UDouala's medical and pharmaceutical sciences faculty. Programmes include Doctorat en Médecine and Doctorat en Pharmacie. WDOMS-listed.

Faculté de Médecine et des Sciences Biomédicales — University of Dschang

UDsang's medical faculty (separate from its veterinary faculty FMV-SM). Issues Doctorat en Médecine for graduates of the Dschang medical programme.

Private and partnership medical schools

A small number of private and partnership institutions also issue medical credentials in Cameroon. WDOMS listing status varies by institution — always check the current WDOMS directory before relying on a credential from a non-state medical school. Non-WDOMS institutions are typically not ECFMG-eligible regardless of how the credential appears.

Cameroon Medical Council registration

The Ordre National des Médecins du Cameroun(Cameroon Medical Council) is the statutory body authorised to register practising physicians. To legally practise medicine in Cameroon, a Doctorat en Médecine holder must be inscribed on the Council's register. International regulators typically verify both the Doctorat and the Council registration; the Council also issues letters of good standing when a foreign regulator specifically requires one.

International licensure pathways

United States — ECFMG / USMLE

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certifies international medical graduates for entry to US residency through the USMLE. ECFMG verifies the applicant's medical school is WDOMS-listed and primary-source verifies the Doctorat en Médecine with the issuing school (FMSB UY1, FHS UB, FMSP UD, etc.). The Council registration is not a separate ECFMG requirement but may be requested during licensure in a specific state.

  • WDOMS recognition (FAIMER / WFME directory).
  • Primary-source verification of the Doctorat from the issuing school.
  • USMLE Steps 1, 2 CK and 3.
  • Clinical Skills assessment (where current ECFMG policy requires).

Canada — MCC / MCCQE

The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) registers international medical graduates through the MCCQE pathway. Verification of the Doctorat is performed by physician credentials services (PCRC / source.canada.ca). Provincial colleges then licence individually.

United Kingdom — GMC / PLAB

The General Medical Council (GMC) admits international medical graduates to the UK register via the PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) examinations. The GMC verifies the medical school is acceptable (WDOMS-listed and meeting GMC criteria), and primary-source verifies the qualification.

Australia — AMC

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) assesses international medical graduates through the standard or competent authority pathways. AMC verifies via primary-source confirmation with the issuing medical school and may require Council registration evidence.

Other African medical councils (ECSA, WAHO regions)

Many African medical councils accept Cameroonian credentials through reciprocal recognition arrangements within ECCAS, WAHO and similar regional groupings. Verification remains primary-source through the Cameroonian medical school + Council registration confirmation.

The two-layer verification chain — for international medical adjudicators

Layer 1 — Medical school primary-source verification

Confirm with the issuing Cameroonian medical school (FMSB UY1, FHS UB, FMSP UD, FMSB UDsang, etc.):

  • The Doctorat en Médecine was issued to the named applicant.
  • The dates of study, internship rotations and graduation match the institutional record.
  • The credential reference / matricule on the certificate matches the school's record.
  • No subsequent revocation or amendment.

Layer 2 — Cameroon Medical Council registration verification

Confirm with the Ordre National des Médecins du Cameroun:

  • The physician is currently registered with the Council.
  • The registration number / inscription number matches the Council's roll.
  • For "letter of good standing" requirements: no disciplinary action against the physician.
  • Where applicable, specialty registration (DES — Diplôme d'Études Spécialisées) is recorded.

Layer 3 — Specialty / postgraduate verification

For applicants holding postgraduate specialisations (DES in cardiology, surgery, paediatrics, etc.), additional verification with the issuing institution and the specialty board / chamber may apply. Sub-specialisation records are typically held by the same medical school faculty that issued the underlying Doctorat, but international regulators sometimes require additional attestation from a national specialty college.

Common adjudication pitfalls

Treating WES / ECE evaluation as primary-source verification

ECFMG, MCC, GMC and AMC pathways require primary-source verification directly with the issuing school. A WES / ECE equivalency report is not a substitute. ECFMG specifically requires the school to despatch confirmation directly to ECFMG; an applicant cannot transmit the verification.

Mis-identifying the issuing school

FMSB UY1 vs FMSB UDsang vs FMSP UDouala vs FHS UB are different institutions. International adjudicators sometimes mis-route verification to the wrong school. The applicant's credential reference and the institutional seal disambiguate.

Council registration confusion

A practitioner can hold a valid Doctorat en Médecine without current Council registration (if registration has lapsed or was never sought). Conversely, current Council registration doesn't substitute for primary-source verification of the underlying Doctorat. Both layers are independent.

Delays underestimated

Realistic medical-school verification turnaround in Cameroon is 4–16 weeks. Older credentials (more than 10–15 years) often require physical archive retrieval, extending the timeline. Council verification adds typically 2–4 weeks on top. ECFMG applicants commonly underestimate this and miss ECFMG application deadlines.

How VeriCam handles medical-credential verification

VeriCam routes both layers in parallel — issuing-school primary-source verification + Council-registration confirmation — on a single audit-preserved case file. We correspond in the institution's working language (typically French for FMSB UY1, FMSP UDouala, FMSB UDsang; English for FHS UB) and follow up in-person at the school or Council when digital channels are slow. The Council letter of good standing can be requested where the receiving regulator requires it.
