Cameroonian nurses and midwives are among the most internationally mobile healthcare professionals from Africa. The UK NHS, US healthcare systems, Canadian provinces and Gulf states all actively recruit Cameroonian-trained nurses — but the verification pathway for nursing credentials differs in important ways from the medical-doctor pathway. This guide structures it.
The Cameroonian nursing credential landscape
Cameroon issues nursing credentials at several levels through multiple institutional types, which is a common source of adjudication confusion. The major credential families:
BSc Nursing / Licence en Sciences Infirmières
A 3-year (Bachelor / Licence) academic credential issued by university health-sciences faculties. The most-internationally-recognised Cameroonian nursing credential. Issued by:
- Faculty of Health Sciences — University of Buea (Anglophone, BSc Nursing).
- FMSB UY1, FMSP UDouala, FMSB UDsang (Francophone, Licence en Sciences Infirmières).
- University of Bamenda Faculty of Health Sciences (Anglophone, BSc Nursing).
State Registered Nurse (SRN) — diploma-level qualification
A professional nursing diploma issued by Cameroon's state nursing schools (Centre Hospitalier et Universitaire, Hôpital Central, regional state nursing schools). Typically 3 years of training. Pre-LMD credential family, still in active circulation and verified by the issuing nursing school.
State Enrolled Nurse (SEN) — auxiliary-level qualification
A shorter (typically 2-year) professional credential for enrolled / auxiliary nursing roles. Distinct from registered nurse qualifications and internationally typically maps to licensed practical nurse / nursing aide categories rather than registered nurse.
Midwifery credentials
Cameroonian midwifery training is delivered through university health-sciences faculties (BSc Midwifery / Licence en Maïeutique) and through state midwifery schools. Many Cameroonian nurses hold a combined nursing + midwifery qualification.
Specialty / advanced practice credentials
Cameroonian nurses can pursue specialty credentials — nurse anaesthetist, paediatric nursing, public-health nursing, etc. These are typically post-Licence diplomas issued by university faculties or speciality nursing schools.
The Cameroon Nursing & Midwifery Council
The Ordre National des Infirmiers, Infirmières et Sages-Femmes du Cameroun (Cameroon Nursing & Midwifery Council) registers practising nurses and midwives. Licensure to practise requires inscription on the Council's roll, which separately confirms the academic qualification and adds:
- Registration as a Registered Nurse, Enrolled Nurse, or Midwife.
- Where applicable, specialty registration.
- Letter of good standing on request (required by most foreign nursing regulators).
International nursing licensure pathways
United States — CGFNS + NCLEX-RN
The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) evaluates Cameroonian nursing credentials for US nursing licensure. The CGFNS evaluation typically includes:
- Credential Evaluation Service (CES) Professional Report — primary-source verification of the academic credential + Council registration.
- NCLEX-RN exam (administered by NCSBN) for registered nurse licensure.
- State Board of Nursing application in the licensing state.
- VisaScreen Certificate (CGFNS, for occupation visa).
United Kingdom — NMC + OSCE
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) admits Cameroonian nurses through the standard "Test of Competence" pathway — CBT (computer-based) followed by OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination). The NMC requires:
- Primary-source verification of nursing credential with the issuing school.
- Cameroon Nursing Council letter of good standing.
- English language requirement (IELTS / OET).
- CBT and OSCE passes.
Canada — provincial regulatory bodies (RNAO, CRNBC, etc.)
Canada admits foreign-trained nurses through provincial regulatory bodies. The NCAS (Nursing Community Assessment Service) assesses credentials, and provinces apply their own licensure rules. Cameroonian nurses typically need primary-source credential verification + Council letter of good standing + CNA NCLEX-RN exam + English language assessment.
Australia — AHPRA / NMBA
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) under AHPRA assesses Cameroonian nurses through the standard "Skills Assessment" + assessment-of-internationally-qualified-nurses pathway. Verification requirements parallel CGFNS / NMC.
Gulf states — Prometric exams + ministry licensure
UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman license foreign nurses through ministry processes that typically include a Prometric exam (Saudi, UAE) or DHA / HAAD assessments (UAE). Cameroonian credentials require primary-source verification and Council letter of good standing.
Two-layer verification chain — for nursing adjudicators
Layer 1 — Nursing school primary-source verification
Confirm with the issuing nursing school or university faculty of health sciences:
- The nursing credential was issued to the named applicant.
- Programme length and clinical-rotations record match.
- Credential reference / matricule matches the institutional record.
- For diploma-level SRN / SEN credentials, the issuing state nursing school confirms the award.
Layer 2 — Council registration + letter of good standing
Confirm with the Ordre National des Infirmiers du Cameroun:
- Practitioner is currently registered as RN / SRN / SEN / Midwife as applicable.
- Registration number / inscription matches the Council roll.
- Letter of good standing — no disciplinary action; current registration in force.
- Specialty registration where applicable.
Common adjudication pitfalls
SRN diploma vs BSc Nursing — internationally different
A Cameroonian State Registered Nurse diploma is an authoritative registered nurse qualification within Cameroon but maps differently across international jurisdictions. Some receiving regulators (NMC, CGFNS) accept SRN-level credentials for the RN pathway with bridging; others require the BSc Nursing for direct equivalency.
SEN credential mapped to RN
State Enrolled Nurse (SEN) credentials are typically not equivalent to registered nurse abroad. Treating an SEN certificate as an RN credential is a common adjudication error. The Cameroonian Council registration disambiguates.
Nursing school not on a known registry
Cameroonian nursing training takes place at university faculties of health sciences, state nursing schools, and a small number of private institutions. Private institutions without MINESUP / MINSANTE accreditation issue credentials that are not recognised by the Cameroon Nursing Council, and therefore not licensable internationally. Verify the institution's accreditation alongside the credential.
Letter of good standing aging
International nursing regulators typically require a "letter of good standing" issued within 3–6 months of the licence application. Older letters are typically rejected. Plan the Council request timing to fit the receiving regulator's window.
How VeriCam handles nursing-credential verification
VeriCam routes nursing-credential verification through the issuing school (university faculty or state nursing school) and the Cameroon Nursing & Midwifery Council in parallel on a single audit-preserved case file. We correspond in the institution's working language (English for FHS UB / UBa, French for FMSB / FMSP / FMSB UDsang and state nursing schools). Letter of good standing is requested fresh on each international-regulator engagement.
